Summer is officially here and with that comes more home maintenance to tackle. As we close out May and enter into one of the hottest months of the year, cross these items off your “To-Do List”
Prepare Your Home For Summer Visitors
Summertime means vacation time, which sometimes means you will have family staying with you in your spare bedroom. When entertaining your guests, it’s all about the little things. Stock the closet with extra pillows and blankets. Provide them with hotel-size toiletries and towels to make them feel right at home.
Have Your Air Conditioner Serviced
We can stress the importance of this enough. While it’s better to get your air conditioner serviced before the warmer weather hits, it’s never too late to get it checked. No one wants their air to breakdown when it’s 90 degrees outside.
Don’t have central air? No problem. Use your ceiling fans to keep yourself cool and switch the direction of air flow.
Organize Your Garage
There’s no better time to organize your garage than right now! Get rid of clutter by installing cubbies and shelving units. The cubbies and shelves will help you organize power tools, sports equipment and household supplies.
Create An Emergency Kit
Summer can bring some severe weather. Be prepared for thunderstorms and tornados that bring power outages and more damage by preparing an emergency kit. These are a few of the items you should include in your kit:
- Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days. The water can be used for drinking and sanitation.
- A 3-day supply of non-perishable food with a can opener.
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- First-aid kit
- Extra cell phone chargers
- Change of clothes
- Blankets and pillows
In addition to the kit, find out the safest place for shelter that you and your family can gather. Most home’s “safe room” will be an interior or basement room. Avoid windows and open areas.
